It had been for the first time in Roman Empires history that a philosopher would sit at the throne as a King!

The task of being a philosopher-king and bringing about the vision of Platos Republic to reality was what Marcus Aurelius strieved to achieve.

But the ground reality was different. Rome was falling apart. Different regions were rebelling and declaring themselves as independent.

The first task of Marcus was to prevent this from happening. i.e. to prevent the empire from being put to pieces even before the foundation for Platos Republic could be put into place.

And so Marcus kept reminding himself to not go expecting a Platos Republic so soon.

Sadly his entire life was spent in the survival of empire itself. And Rome never came close to Marcus vision ever.

And this is a reminder to each of us.

We might have a vision and an ideal to follow. And that is good. We should strive for it each day. But keep reminding ourself that we cannot expect to reach the goal quickly.

It will take time. As it took Marcus time. Maybe our entire life like Marcus would be spent in solving the major issue at hand even before we could see atleast a glimpse of our Ideal take shape.

Lets say an an example, the universe wants you to building a Pyramid in the middle of the desert as your purpose in life. And when you move forward to make this into reality you might spend your entire life in just procurring the land for the Pyramid. And you might never have the opportunity to see the brick being laid or even the completion of the monument.

And thats ok! All that matters in the end is that you were sent to do a certain task here on earth. You took the steps and fought the inner as well as outer battles with all your might. You progressed each day even if slightly.

So remember in Marcus's words... "Don't go expecting Plato's Republic; be satisfied with even the smallest progress, and treat the outcome of it all as unimportant"

This quite depressing at first read.

Yet, it can be quite empowering if it is embraced in right spirits.

Yes. Also disheartening to not be able to see the world that you envisioned become it quickly. But patience and doing the right thing is what keeps us going till the end. This also inspires others to go about it after we are long gone!
