Google is the last place to look! If you want to gain detailed info on something.
For the past few months, many people are struggling to find information about something using google.
E.g. I wanted to search the difference between blogging on Wix and blogging on Shopify.
It turned up with no result accurately pointing to this query. All 10 searches were pointing to general differences between Wix and Shopify.
There are other points I have observed too:
1. Even if you change the wording slightly here and there, the search still shows up the same.
2. Even if you go to the 2nd or 3rd page, the search never changes.
3. Most top 10 queries are giving you the exact same info on the topic. Instead of 10 different perspectives, you get all 10 saying the same. The status quo has been established here.
4. Content in the top 10 is going towards favouring the generic audience. The first-timers. The ones who have zero knowledge of a subject.
Even if you search deeper it tends to show the same generic content.
5. Youtube search is slowly shifting towards the same.
To understand the process of Lasik (eye operation that I wanted to do recently) I finally ended up using Reddit as google was giving me the same generic pointers towards precautions and safety. Reddit had multiple people giving their individual experiences which helped me understand better what exactly to expect before, during and after the operation.
Here is why Google is Getting Dumber day by day:
1. Google Butchered Blogging
Back in early 2000s when humanity was just born, blogging was all the rage. A lot of ideas that couldn't make their way to the mass audiences because of the mass media monopoly were coming to the fore. The digital pen was becoming mightier than the sword.
Anybody could write and share their ideas with newspaper the masses without the need for taking a job at a Newspaper agency or a magazine.
And at its peak... Google Butchered Blogging!
It bought blogger.com so it could run Ads all over it and stopped whatever innovation was taking place in the field of blogging.
Even WordPress, its competition now didn't have any incentive to innovate as its competition (Blogger) was rendered sterile by Google.
To this day Blogger is exactly the same as it was in 2003! It is stuck there and will forever be.
2. Facebook follows the principle of disconnection.
Facebook is considered one of the 1st social media channels to connect the entire global audience together. And yes on the surface it does. But as most people have had its bitter pill, they know the opposite has been the case.
Fb since a long time has been following the idea of isolation. It once was a space where everybody shared ideas from different places on the internet.
Your friend shared a youtube video. Or a poem he found on a blog or an article he linked.
And this is what Facebook hated! It didn't like that people's attention was going somewhere else. It wanted all for itself!
It made changes to its algorithm and whatever came from external websites was not shown to anyone. And the only thing that facebook was good at doing i.e connecting ideas was lost!
People were now stuck in an endless loop of watching Facebook prefered content which promoted shallow mindlessness. People finding great content via social media was lost once and for all.
3. Reddit Spamming
To blame others while allowing yourself to get away scot free is a sin.
So here is an example of how bloggers spammed themselves to death on Reddit.
Reddit is a place similar to what Facebook once was. Platform to share ideas. Though anonymously. And this is what most bloggers took advantage of.
In various communities, bloggers shared their links obsessively even though they knew their content wasn't much meant to help a community. And so most communities banned links to outside websites.
No linking to a website meant people lost the incentive to write and hope people would read their content.
The Grand Escape:
The best way to find true knowledge today is still what was true a hundred years ago.
And that is Books!
Nothing comes closer (besides working directly with an expert) to what's contained in a book An expert who died aeons ago can still pass on his wisdom to you thanks to books.
And thats what is left. Our last hope of getting to truth. Aquiring knowledge that we truely need. Knowledge that is deep! One that is shared by experts in a meaningful way! Knowledge that touches a part of our soul.
And therefore Google is no more the God it once was!
God has fallen!
