This book is controversial in the eyes of the people who have never read it.
On the surface judging by the title it feels like a book teaching people the dark arts of using tricks to manipulate and control others.
In the beginning I too felt the same.
But when I picked up the book and read it in college days, it was a completely different story altogether.
I chose to read it to understand how people were manipulating me in my life. And put an end to it.
The book was doing a good job at it by showing me how. But the real flip happened when I realised...
That it was not others that were manipulating me. It was me doing it to myself! It was my inner trickster blurring my inner lens and showing me a world of scarcity and fear. It mas me who was "playing politics" with myself!
And once I became aware of these thoughts and emotions, the inner trickster making me see the world in a lose-lose, emotionally divided way... the journey towards real psychic development started!
I was no more wasting my time thinking "XYZ is playing this trick" or "How could she say this" or "He hurt my feelings"
Granted! This world is not all sunshine and rainbows! Its also necessary sometimes to be aware that a few people will always play the lose-lose game with you. And its important to put boundries and guard your inner thriving kingdom from them.
But that requires a different set of tools to use. That requires observing people without judgement and seeing their patterns over time. And then basing your decision based on objective evaluation.
The inner political trickster mind doesn't help with this. It sees every situation and person with the lens of "He wants to hurt me" or "She didn't give me the respect I deserve" or "I am right and I will show it to him"
The best thing about Robert Greene is he didn't stop at one book. He went deeper and created many books like The 33 Strategies of War where you become aware of your inner dark forces or The Art of Seduction where you learn how your mind seduces you to eat the wrong fruits of life! Or 50th Law which helps you confront your inner fears directly! And for that reason I love Robert Greene and not one but all his books!
History will see Robert Greene as not someone who taught others how to use the dark arts to control and manipulate others but someone who taught others to awaken their inner power to became free of their darkness!
